Arc Mobile Nitro 450qd Hands On Review

More and more newbies are coming to the gadget world. There’s Kata, SKK Mobile, Gionee, Intex and Arc Mobile. Most of these smartphones want to prove that being a newbie doesn’t mean quality is compromised. The Arc Mobile Nitro 450qd is a perfect example of that. But before I share my experience with it, here is a quick rundown of specs.

Design and Build Quality:

The design resembles HTC models of 2011. It looks old but not ugly either. I actually prefer the design because I’ve always liked HTC’s designs. It gives a reassuring grip thanks to its matte finish. When it comes to build quality, it is surprisingly well built. No creaks, weird sounds or crackling inside the device. Just be careful with that glass protecting the screen. Its no Gorilla Glass so better put a screen protector. I just paid P100 for the screen protector and had is installed on Arc Mobile’s kiosk at SM Megamall.

Screen:

Having a 4.5 inch screen size on this price point is not new. Cherry Mobile Burst is priced around P4,500 plus (now on sale at P3,899) which also has a 4.5 inch display. What makes it stand out is its a 4.5-inch qHD display, better than the Burst. Its a TFT panel not IPS (screen technology found on the iPhone and most Android smartphones) so expect not so good screen quality when you tilt the device sideways.  I also find the display a little dimmed as well. Its not as bright as other phones  but this may be a plus for some users which hates people staring at their phones when using it. You may have a hard time using the phone under direct sunlight even in full 100% brightness.

Performance:

The MediaTek 6589 processor is a new model and can be found on other phones like MyPhone A919i and Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2.0. These phones performed very well and very minimal lags and the Nitro is no exception. It performed very well on daily use. On heavy use and stress testing, lags remained very minimal. Playing games is zero lag especially when playing Plants vs Zombies 2 despite the limited 512MB RAM.

Camera:

You shouldn’t be expecting so much from the camera. The 5 megapixel camera takes good pictures on good lighting conditions but it kinda struggles on low light. The flash is not bright enough when taking pictures in low light. Another gripe is the lack of autofocus. Overall, if you are the type of taking pictures, post it on Facebook or Instagram but not really keen on details, then the phone’s camera will work just fine.

Here are some camera samples taken from different lighting conditions:

Connectivity:

All the usual suspects are present – Bluetooth, DLNA, USB 3.0 and WiFi. But what surprises me is the HSPA+ capabilities of the device. Not all devices has HSPA+ Its an internet standard which is faster than regular 3G speeds but not at par with 4G/LTE speeds.

Battery:

Most smartphones sports 1,500 mAh battery or even lower on this price point. But Arc Mobile opted to put a bigger 1,800 mAh battery. It will give more 10 hours of moderate use. On light usage, it will give you about a day and a half before the phone dies.

Verdict:

The Arc Mobile Nitro 450qd is a good combination of value for money and quality, believe it or not. Battery life is a plus coupled with good performance from its quad core processor. This phone is highly recommended for buyers who want a phone with decent specs below P5,000.
