Why Smart’s Fair Use Policy is Better Than Globe

I was reading various blogs and exchange of opinions regarding Globe’s revised Fair Use Policy which limits a subscriber to 1GB per day bandwidth cap or 3GB per month which ever comes first. To those who has no idea about the topic, when you are surfing the web there’s is a transfer of data – download and upload. Data transfer is measured by how many bytes, kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB) has been running while surfing. Once you reach 1GB (that’s 1,000MB) your internet connection will be downgraded from 3G, HSPA+, LTE to 2G speeds and that’s sloooowww.

On a day to day mobile internet use, it is really seldom to reach 1GB of data transfers if you’re like just checking Facebook, Twitter, Viber chatting, uploading pictures on Instagram or just watching You Tube videos. When you start downloading games especially those graphic intense ones and torrents, I’m pretty sure your internet will be downgraded in no time.

Now, it seems many subscribers hate Globe right now (including myself). The telco released an infograph about their FUP but rants and disappointments continue to pour. People are now setting their eyes on Globe’s chief rival Smart. We all know how vast Smart LTE’s network and how incredibly fast it is. Just so you know, Smart has their own Fair Use Policy which limits a subscriber to 1.5GB per day or 1.5GB per month which is ever comes first. But unlike Globe, Smart is more lenient when it comes to implementing its policy.

But wait there’s more! If Globe has exemptions to the FUP (P5 per 15 mins internet and BlackBerry Internet Service), Smart has more exemptions like VAS (value added services). If you are subscribed from Smart’s unli LTE for 1 day, 7 days and 30 days, you are exempted from the 1.5GB data cap! I am on Smart’s All In Plan 500 and currently subscribed to LTE 995 which has unli LTE for 30 days. Exempted ako! This makes Smart’s FUP better than Globe.

According to tech blog Yugatech, Smart’s free and unlimited LTE is until March 31, 2014 for Unlidata subscribers. Beyond that date regular surfing rates will apply if you’re on LTE. You have to add LTE 995 to enjoy unli LTE on top of your plan.  My idol Abe Olandres, founder of Yugatech, is a loyal Globe subscriber and suddenly switched to Smart after Globe implemented the FUP. I suddenly took my Globe SIM out of my Sony Xperia Z1 and inserted my Smart SIM and subscribed to LTE 995. So happy that I made a switch. 🙂

  1. Nice blog.. I will try smart lte sim tomorrow.. I dont want to make any comments until i try smart lte.. So far globe is very crapy.. Iv been a globe user since i was in hs sad to say. That their service is not like before.. Today i have baught a zte broad band with tattoo sim from globe..after 4 hrs of browsing crap my data usage is high already.. Geesh..

  2. i have tried it already and i have done all the updates, download and browsing. within 8hrs i have done all and consumed 5GB of data. but this morning i cannot connect to the internet anymore. im using ZTE pocket wifi i thought there is a problem with the device but when i put the Sim to my LG G3 it is still not working. can anyone please help ^_^ thanks.

    • Yes. These are big files to download. Smart and Globe wants to maintain the quality of their LTE service so they imposed a data cap. I suggest you do your downloading at home using your wired internet service.

      • Agree ako ke Mark. sakin kasi 1 plan globe undli data, 1 plan sa smart na me unli data (company phone) at 1 globe wired broadband. My verdict is that my wired globe broadband is reliable with 100kbps max download limit for plan 999. As for the globe postpaid mabilis pero mas ok kung LTE.

  3. i receive various letter from smartbro’s lawyers. either i pay 3000 pesos or pay 100 k in litigation.
i had use smartbro for 10 days even though i paid 2 months in advanced. i just got so exasperated that i enroll for globe connection when i found out that i had reach their internet capping. if i haven’t research for it i will never know that their is internet capping. they should inform their customers before asking for application fee. also their technician that installed their antenna should inform their customers, im sure even though the customers would lost their nonrefundable application fee- they would not go through with this measly capping.(globes capping for 2 days is smartbro capping for 1 month with the same monthly bill). i should be the one that should ask for a refund instead im the one facing litigation.

  4. That’s a really nice post, with usefull details. I searched Smart website for terms and conditions about Prepaid Smart 995 Unlisurf with Pocket Wifi 4G device, but i couldn’t find any information about the limits of the usage.

What do you mean by which ever comes first ? “Fair Use Policy which limits a subscriber to 1.5GB per day or 1.5GB per month which is ever comes first”
    That’s a huge difference!

Does anyone knows how many GB can be used everyday…?
That would be very helpful : )

  5. smart LTE sucks than globe. im a smart user but im lovin’ globe now. you’ll have to manage your data consumption on globe due to its data policy. while smart, khit hindi tulad sa globe ang data policy nila, un connection ay prang 2g/3g lng. it was based on my experience for yrs of using smart. ung cellsite nila is only 20 feet away sa bahay namin but it still suck!!!

  6. Hi Mark,

    Referring to your statement:

“If you are subscribed from Smart’s unli LTE for 1 day, 7 days and 30 days, you are exempted from the 1.5GB data cap! I am on Smart’s All In Plan 500 and currently subscribed to LTE 995 which has unli LTE for 30 days. Exempted ako! ”

Do you mean to say I just have to subscribe to any of these Unli LTE (P50, P299, P995) and I will be exempted from 1.5GB data cap? No data cap whatsoever right after? Just pure unlimited LTE connection?

I have a Smart LTE sim in a 4G LTE mobile wifi device and was considering trying the P299-7days Unli LTE. But I stumbled into this data cap thingy which gave me second thoughts. Can you please confirm?

  7. Does gaming use download data or the unlimited surfing one? specifically for DOTA 2, CSGO, etc

Smart has this plan that you get unlimited surfing but you have around 3GB download and video stream

    • It does use download data, since accessing online servers consume MB, just like streaming.
