HARDWARE AND DESIGN:

Both phones have retained much of the predecessor’s design and both have significant improvements as well. One improvement on Samsung’s flagship is the  faux leather back cover with tiny dimples with it. Sony, on the other hand, retains the glass front and back with metal trim on the side. Another level up improvement from the S5 is the IP58 certification which makes the phone water and dust resistant. Remember, its water RESISTANT not water PROOF. The Z2 is water proof only when submerged up to 1 meter deep of water and up to 30 minutes only. These are the Z2’s best advantage over the S5 – better design, better build quality and water proof.

Winner: Sony Xperia Z2

DISPLAY:

One noticeable improvement of the Z2’s display. Sony has finally decided to use an IPS display and ditched the TFT display found on the Z1. The result is better viewing angles and better color reproduction. Sadly, the S5’s Super AMOLED display is unmatched.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5

SOFTWARE AND FEATURES:

Samsung has been known for adding gimmicky features on their Galaxy line. This time they added a feature found on the Apple iPhone 5s – fingerprint scanner. But they’ve also added another unique feature – a heart rate sensor found beside the camera flash at the back. Sony did minor improvements on the software side. Both phones are running the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5

CAMERA:

Sony retains much of the Z1’s camera. We all know that Sony remains to have the best camera sensors for smartphones. Sony is even the supplier of camera sensors for Apple’s iPhone line. Samsung has also improved its camera by putting a 16 megapixel sensor on the S5. We cannot judge based on pictures taken from the phone so we will give our verdict based on the specs.

Winner: Sony Xperia Z2

BATTERY:

On major complaint of Galaxy S4 users is the battery. We have friends who owns one and they have been consistently complaining about how fast the battery drains especially if LTE or WiFi is turned on. Samsung addressed the problem by bumping up the battery from 2,600 mAh to 2,800 mAh battery on the S5. The company even added an Ultra Power Saving mode which turns off most of your apps and turns the screen black and white. Samsung even claims that the 10% remaining battery juice can last up to 24 hours when the Ultra Power Saving Mode is turned on. Sony, on the other hand has bumped up the a little bit from 3,000 mAh to 3,200 mAh on the Z2. We’ve used the Sony Xperia Z1 a few months back and we are amazed on the battery’s endurance especially when the Stamina Mode (Sony’s power saving mode) is turned off.

Winner: Sony Xperia Z2

VERDICT:

We firmly believe that the Sony Xperia Z2 is the better choice over the Samsung Galaxy S5. We really do find these new S5 features too gimmicky and we think these are not needed. User do want better battery, simpler UI, and better design. We can’t wait to get a grip on both devices and give you guys a much comprehensive review.
