Gionee ELife E7 Hands On and First Impressions

Last Sunday, Gionee Smartphone Philippines has unveiled their latest flagship, the Gionee ELife E7. We had a chance to play around the said device and we would like to share our first impressions.

Gionee ELife E7 specs:

  • 2.5GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8974AC processor (LTE variant)
  • 2.2GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8974 processor (3G variant)
  • 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage
  • 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage
  • 5.5 inch LTPS Full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels) 400 ppi
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • 16 megapixel rear facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 8 megapixel front facing camera with autofocus
  • LTE (on selected model), 3G, WiFi, WiFi Display, WiFi hotspot,
  • Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, WiFi Display
  • GPS, A-GPS
  • 2,500 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jellybean with Amigo 2.0 UI
  • SRP: P24,500 (LTE variant)

  • Eye-candy colors! We do love the bright orange we got here.
  • The phone has a unibody design made of high quality polycarbonate.
  • Just like its predecessor, the Gionee ELife E6, it is extremely well built and elegant looking. It is pretty obvious that Gionee has paying been so much attention to details.
  • Camera is impressive! UI is idiot-proof, pictures taken from its 16 megapixel rear facing camera is one of the best we’ve seen. Unfortunately, we were not able to send pictures via Bluetooth.
  • We were expecting that the ELife E7 will be running Android 4.4.2 Kitkat but sadly, it is running Android 4.2 Jellybean. We noticed that the Amigo 2.0 UI on top of Android runs smoothly which is better than the ELife E6 of last year.

Now we’re exciting for the review unit! We are excited to put the phone to the test. Overall, we had good first impressions of the phone. It is indeed far better looking, gives better performance than some well know flagships.

Apple Discontinues iPad 2 and Brings Back iPad 4 (with Retina Display)

After it added an 8GB iPhone 5c, Apple discontinues the 3-year old iPad 2 and brings back the iPad 4 or popularly known as the iPad With Retina Display. The iPad 4 was discontinued when Apple announced the iPad Air and opted to retain the iPad 2 as the cheaper or low end alternative. We think that the main reason why Apple revives the iPad 4 is the iPad 2’s poor sales.

Apple iPad 4 (with Retina display)

  • 1.4GHz dual core Apple A6x processor
  • PowerVR SGX544MP quad core graphics
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16 to 128GB internal memory
  • 9.7-inch IPS LCD display (1536 x 2048 pixels) 264 ppi
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus
  • 1.2 megapixel front facing camera
  • LTE, WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0
  • 11,560 mAh battery
  • iOS 7.1

The iPad 4 16GB WiFi only model is priced P22,990 while the WiFi + Cellular version is priced P28,490.

Starmobile Diamond X1: Specifications, Price and Availability

It seems my colleagues are excited to see the first octacore Mediatek processor from a local brand. Starmobile has already teased the Starmobile Diamond X1 with a 6-inch display,13 megapixel camera and with 2GB RAM onboard. More specs are revealed as bloggers did some digging. It turns out that the Diamond X1 is the rebranded Intex Aqua i17 which was announced in India last Month.

Starmobile Diamond X1 specs:

  • 1.7GHz Octa-core MediaTek 6592 processor
  • Mali 450MP4 graphics
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16/32GB internal storage
  • 6-inch HD IPS LCD display (1280 x 720 pixels) 245 ppi
  • 13 megapixel rear facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 5 megapixel front facing camera
  • Dual SIM, Dual Standby
  • HSPA+, WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth
  • GPS, A-GPS

They may replace the camera with a bigger 18 megapixel sensor possibly with BSI or maybe a bigger battery. It said will be priced below P15,000 and will be coming this January 2014. Stay tuned.

Cherry Mobile W900 LTE Now Available!

We first heard about the Cherry Mobile W900, the first smartphone from a local brand to be LTE capable, from a leaked photo last October. So far, no official announcement was made from Cherry Mobile about this phone until we saw the official brochures of it this month. Cherry Angel, one of Cherry Mobile’s reseller stores, is now selling the W900 for P11,499.

Cherry Mobile W900 specs:

  • 1.5GHz Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB internal storage expandable via MicroSD
  • 4.3 inch HD OGS (one glass solution) display (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • 12 megapixel front facing camera with LED flash and Back Side Illumination (BSI)
  • Android 4.2 Jellybean
  • SRP: P11,499

If the Nokia Lumia 625 only supports Globe LTE network (1800 mHz), it is said that Cherry Mobile W900 will only support Smart’s LTE network (2100 mHz). There were also rumors that Smart will be offering the W900 on the unlidata and all-in postpaid plans.  You can check Cherry Angel’s Facebook page for more information.
